POINT PLEASANT — Main Street was a real “treat” on Thursday for those young ones (and the young at heart), attending the annual Halloween Block Party.
Free games, free candy, free food, free music and most of all, free memories greeted attendees.
This year, Point Pleasant City Officials asked Councilman Dylan Handley to help lead the event planning. Prior to Handley stepping into the role, Dusty Morrison of Point Pleasant grew the block party over recent years, inheriting a community tradition which had become a cornerstone for the downtown events calendar after being started, and shaped, by the vision of the late Denise Scarberry. Scarberry even continued to volunteer at the block party after she stepped down as the organizer. Part of Scarberry’s vision, she often said, was that the block party be free, safe, and open to all. She passed away in 2020.
In a social media post, Handley recognized the work of Scarberry and Morrison, as well as the community response in general. He noted the contributions of Mayor Amber Tatterson, City Clerk Shannon Person, Street Commissioner Richard Holland, and city staff; Chris Rizer from Main Street Point Pleasant; the Main Street Merchants and Matt Roush; businesses, organizations, groups and churches who all “knocked it out of the park.” (Handley said the City of Point Pleasant would be posting a list recognizing all involved via its Facebook page.)
“…I definitely wanted to take a moment to offer a heartfelt thank you to all of you on behalf of the City Council,” Handley stated via his post. “Already looking forward to next year.”
This year, City Council voted to hold the block party on a different day than trick-or-treat within the city, after hearing from residents who requested the change. Trick-or-treat in Point Pleasant will be held 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 28.
Mason County Extra Edition once again teamed up with community photographer, Ed Lowe, who attended this year’s Halloween Block Party. Pictured below is a slideshow of over 75 of Lowe’s photos which capture the spirit of Thursday’s event. Did Lowe capture you with his camera? Where will he turn up next?
