June 14: In observance of Flag Day

Staff Report

For Mason County Extra Edition

MASON COUNTY — Old Glory takes center stage in whatever room, or space, it occupies, and especially every June 14, which is Flag Day across the United States.

Did you know?

According to the Library of Congress:

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs:

Both President Woodrow Wilson, in 1916, and President Calvin Coolidge, in 1927, issued proclamations asking for the national observance but legislation wasn’t approved by Congress until 1949. President Harry S. Truman signed it into law.

The Stars and Stripes are always flying in Mason County, especially today. From earlier this week, pictured are American flags flying at both the Mansion House, and one high above Tu-Endie-Wei State Park, along with the West Virginia state flag.
